Transpacific Air Cargo
The air lanes carrying electronics, pharma and fast-fashion parcels across the Pacific in freighters and jet bellies.
Overview
Split between dedicated freighters and the belly holds of passenger jets, transpacific air cargo anchors at hubs like Anchorage, Narita, Incheon, Hong Kong and Los Angeles. Semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, seafood and smartphone launches ride it, and since the mid 2010s, platform-driven e-commerce has flooded the lane with direct-to-consumer parcels, lifting volumes to records and straining capacity. Rates spiked multiples during the pandemic and settled, but e-commerce holds the floor. Shippers trade days against dollars: air freight costs many times sea freight and wins whenever stock-outs cost more than fuel.
