Dover-Calais Ferry Route
The 33 kilometer Channel crossing that is Europe's busiest ro-ro ferry and passenger lane.
Overview
The Dover Strait sees several hundred vessel movements a day, among the densest shipping anywhere. Frequent ferry sailings between Dover and Calais carry the core of UK-Europe roll-on roll-off freight and millions of passengers yearly, split with the Channel Tunnel's Le Shuttle. Hovercraft ran the route from 1968 to 2000 before catamarans and conventional ferries took over. Storm stoppages, industrial action and post-Brexit border frictions have repeatedly stress-tested the crossing, and each disruption sends truck queues across Kent that map, in parking lots, exactly how tightly the British supply chain is coupled to 33 kilometers of water.
