Danube Corridor
Europe's second great river, an underused corridor linking the Rhine system to the Black Sea.
Overview
The 1992 Rhine-Main-Danube canal closed the gap to the North Sea, creating a 3,500 kilometer trans-European waterway through ten countries. Barges move grain, fuel and aggregates, and Romanian and Serbian terminals load export grain toward Constanca and the Black Sea. Traffic volumes remain a fraction of the Rhine's, limited by old locks, low bridges and drought years like 2018 and 2022 that dropped levels enough to halt loads. The war in Ukraine raised the river's profile as its ports, from Izmail to Constanta, absorbed rerouted grain and fuels, a reminder of the corridor's strategic slack.
