China-Europe Rail Freight

OverlandModern

The container landbridge from Chinese hubs to Germany that roughly halves ocean transit times.

Overview

The first Chongqing-Duisburg train ran in 2011 across about 11,000 kilometers, with bogie changes at gauge breaks like Alashankou and Khorgos, delivering in 15 to 20 days against 30 to 40 by sea. Provincial subsidies helped volume grow to over 15,000 trains a year, moving laptops, autos and e-commerce westbound with lighter backhauls. Duisburg became Europe's China rail hub. Sanctions enforcement after 2022 tightened screening of Russia-transiting cargo and pushed growth toward the middle corridor via the Caspian. The landbridge is the premium express lane of Eurasian trade, not its backbone.
