Belt and Road Initiative
China's trillion-dollar web of rail, road, port, pipeline and digital projects spanning more than 140 countries since 2013.
Overview
Announced as the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, the initiative bundles infrastructure lending and construction on every continent, with cumulative engagement commonly estimated near a trillion dollars and six overland corridors plus the sea leg. Its visible flagship is the China-Europe rail landbridge. Finance flows through policy banks, and debt sustainability and transparency concerns have forced restructurings and debates in several borrower countries. The EU Global Gateway and the G7's infrastructure partnerships were framed partly as alternatives. Beijing now emphasizes smaller, greener projects, but the corridor geography it drew is already built.
