The Spice Trade Obsession

Pepper and nutmeg once justified fleets, forts and wars. A hold full of Malabar pepper could clear a voyage, and the Dutch traded claims to Manhattan partly to secure a nutmeg monopoly on the island of Run.

Why such value? Slow supply chains, perishable cargo and no substitutes made scarcity rents enormous. The obsession funded the age of exploration and some of history crueler colonial regimes.

The end came not from conquest but from propagation: once cloves grew in Zanzibar and pepper in Sumatra, the monopoly rents evaporated. Scarcity, not flavor, was the business model, and geography eventually leaks..
