Silk Road to Fiber Optics

The Silk Road moved silk at camel speed; today cables move the equivalent of libraries in milliseconds, but the logic rhymes. Data routes still follow geography, choke at narrow seas, and cluster at favored landing points like Singapore, Marseille and Tokyo.

States still fight over nodes: sanctions now target chip flows the way empires once managed caravans, and cable cuts get naval investigations. Latency is the new distance, and traders pay fortunes to shave milliseconds, the way tea clippers once raced for first cargo.

The cargoes changed from silk to signals; the map barely did..
